Wilson Ambrose Campbell was born on 11 November 1830 in Lafayette County, Missouri. He was the son of Tandy Campbell and Mary Ann Wright. After his father died in 1945 Wilson moved out of the family home and started a life for himself. He was working on a farm for $7 monthly at the time and used part of his wages to buy books and in winter attended school paying his tuition and working for his board until he was 18. He then purchased forty acres of land in Johnson County from the Government for $1.25 per acre. By the spring of 1850 he had sold the land and left Missouri on an overland trip to California. The journey was five months and thirteen days and his wagon and ox-team were purchased with profits he had made from the sale of his land in Missouri. In California he had a fair success during the first winter mining at Diamond Springs and then moved on to Georgetown, California where he mined for a few months before moving on to Horse Shoe Bend on the American River where he used all of his savings to buy some claims. After being unsuccessful he abandoned the claims and went down the river to Yankee Slide where he remained for four months and made a little money. He then went to Weaver Creek to a place called Coon Hollow and sometimes called Hangtown. From there he went to San Francisco to start the journey back to Missouri by the Panama route. Disaster struck on the return trip when they were shipwrecked at the Gulf of Tehuantepec and blown from land out to sea for five hundred miles. The ship’s pumps would not work and the entire crew and passengers had to bale the water out of the vessel. They finally made it back to Central America and crossed the country by jack mules to Lake Nicaragua and then on to Graytown where they took a ship to Havana and then to New Orleans and from there home by way of St. Louis. He had $1,000 left after paying trip expenses of $500 and bought 120 acres of land in Johnson County on which he made his home. Wilson Ambrose Campbell married Louisa Hodges on 13 March 1853. Wilson served during the Civil War and was taken prisoner in November 1861. He was stripped of his personal property and held for a time and then turned loose. He continued to serve and attained the rank of Captain. He was at Freeport, Louisiana when his regiment surrendered, sometime after Lee’s surrender. After being paroled he returned to his home after not seeing his wife for over three years. There he built a reasonable fortune sufficient to take several trips including the World’s Fair in Chicago and the New Orleans Exposition. In his 1906 will Wilson left $10,000 plus the remainder of his estate to his wife Louisa, excepting a $5,000 donation to an Endowment Fund for the Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri.
