Elcano Brassfield appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of William Trammel Brassfield at Adair County, Missouri, as age 16 and had attended school within the year. Elcano Brassfield began military service in 1861 at Missouri serving as a private in Company A, 1st Missouri Regiment, Confederate States Army. He ended military service in 1862; with a disability. He married Nancy Ann Ruddell, daughter of John F. Ruddell and Mary McCamy Pennington. Elcano Brassfield was working on the railroad in 1880 at Queen City, Missouri. He appeared on the census of 1880 at Schuyler County, Missouri; enumerated 30 June. Elcano Brassfield was enumerated as the 36 year old head of household. Nancy A Brassfield was enumerated as his 25 year old wife and she was keeping house. Three daughters were enumerated as Lena L age nine, Lucia L age four and Emma E age nine months. Also enumerated was a 27 year old nephew working on the rail road, William Wilcher. He was a carpenter in June 1900 at Queen City, Schuyler County, Missouri. He appeared on the census of 1900 at Schuyler County, Missouri; enumerated 1 June. Elcano Brasfield was enumerated as the 59 year old head of household and unemployed for five months. He owned his home free of mortgage. Nancy N Brasfield was enumerated as his 48 year old wife and the mother of 11 children with 7 still living. Five single daughters were enumerated as Lucia age 23, Delia M age 19, Ellis M [Alice] age 16, Ellen age 13, and Daisy age 5. One married daughter was enumerated as Emma E Nettleship age 20 with her husband Owen W Nettleship age 27. Researcher's Note: Lena (Brassfield) Piper stated her father Elcano Brassfield was a minister. That statement is the only proof found so far and he is not listed as such on any census record.

Elcano Brassfield died on 9 February 1906 at age 61. He was buried at Myers Cemetery, Queen City, Schuyler County, Missouri; with a double marker including his wife Nancy. From the photo it appears to be a replacement marker mounted over an old marker.
